FACULTAD DE FILOSOFÍA International Congress 100 YEARS OF QUANTUM THEORYHistory, Physics and Philosophy Congress Home Page Invited

of Participants up-dated: November 8th 2000 In December 1900 Max Planck communicated for the first time to the German Society of Physics the idea of the quantification of energy. The commemoration of this first centenary of Quantum Theory offers an excellent opportunity for physicists, historians of physics, philosophers of physics and epistemologists to meet together once again. The aim of this international meeting is ambitious. First it aims to contribute to a better understanding of contemporary quantum physics, that has revealed itself as a fundamental theory of Nature. But quantum theory poses many philosophical problems at the ontological and epistemological level as well, that require to be rigorously analysed from a multidisciplinary point of view: the questions of the relationships between theory and experience, the problems of the explanation of the real world, the issues concerning the representation of knowledge, etc. Methodologists of physics and historians of physics are called to play an important role in the solution of these matters. Physicists and philosophers of science are committed to work together, in order to achieve a general understanding of what physics can really do, because science has become today a decisive part of culture. Dates: 22nd - 25th November 2000 Organiser: The Facultad de Filosofía, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science and Department of Theory of Knowledge and Metaphysics.
